Assistant District Attorney
District Attorney's Office - Full-Time; Bethel Office
The Bethel District Attorney’s Office is recruiting to fill a full-time assistant district attorney position. This office is responsible for prosecution of criminal cases in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta and Interior Alaska. The position requires frequent court appearances in the superior and district courts at Bethel and often telephonic appearances in village courts. This position provides an immediate opportunity to gain trial experience and to independently manage a caseload of misdemeanor and felony offenses. There is significant trial work, including pre-trial motion practice.
This position requires the ability to think critically and logically; the ability to communicate clearly verbally and in writing; the ability to organize, prioritize, and work effectively in a deadline controlled atmosphere; and the ability to manage numerous matters simultaneously. There are opportunities for travel to some of the 56 communities in the area, and some travel may be required in connection with trial work in other court locations.
The Bethel office provides ample opportunity to acquire experience in a wide variety of criminal prosecutions, both misdemeanor and felony, in a short period of time. Assistant District Attorneys who fulfill a two year commitment in a rural location are given a preference when being considered to fill vacancies in other district attorney offices in the state. A rural commitment is a great way to acquire a variety of experience that is highly valued within the division. This is also an excellent placement for a person who enjoys outdoor activities, one who is interested in indigenous cultures, or one who seeks a culturally diverse environment.
Interested candidates who would like additional information about this position may contact District Attorney Steve Wallace at (907) 543-2055, or by e-mail at Stephen.Wallace@alaska.gov.
Salary is determined by the legal background and experience of the selected candidate. A salary geographic differential increase of 50% is applied for this location. A comprehensive state benefits package is provided. State attorneys are in the partially-exempt service and serve at-will at the pleasure of the Attorney General.
Candidates who are interested in applying for a position must submit a resume that includes a complete history of education and professional work experience and identifies at least three professional employment references. Please also include a professional writing sample. A cover letter should specify the position for which the applicant is applying. If applying for multiple positions, the cover letter should specify which of the positions the applicant wishes to be considered for, but only one set of application materials is necessary. Applications for this position will be accepted through August 27, 2017.
