Woman Indicted for embezzlement from East High School
May 31, 2013
On May 24th, 2013, 45 year old Gayle White was indicted for the theft of over $80,000 from East High School between August of 2006 and June of 2009. White worked at East High School during that period as the activities secretary before leaving to work at Chugiak High School. An internal audit by the Anchorage School District showed numerous instances of accounting discrepancies for cash funds handled by White. After a thorough review of the accounting records, a report was made to the Anchorage Police Department.
White was indicted on two counts of scheme to defraud, theft in the first degree, and misapplication of property. The indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial at which the government must prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
If convicted, White faces a sentence of up to 10 years in prison and a fine of $100,000. Sentencing is based on the judge’s view of the seriousness of the crime and the offender’s criminal history, if any.
