Press Release

Anchorage Man Convicted of Sexual Abusing Minor Granddaughter

April 21, 2014

On April 17, 2014, a jury found a 62-year-old Anchorage man guilty of sexually abusing his 4-year-old granddaughter in 2011. The defendant’s name is not being revealed to protect the identity of his victim granddaughter.

The defendant permitted his homeless adult daughter and her young children to live with him at an apartment in Anchorage. Because the defendant had previously sexually abused another young girl in the family, the adult daughter was worried that the defendant would sexually abuse the 4-year-old.

On September 29, 2011, the adult daughter called 911 to report that she had seen the defendant sexually abuse the 4-year-old. The case was referred to the Anchorage Police Department Crimes Against Children Unit and the Office of Children’s Services for investigation.

The defendant was found guilty of one count of sexual abuse of a minor in the second degree. The defendant faces a sentence of 99 years in prison as a result of this conviction.

Sentencing is scheduled for August 15, 2014, before Anchorage Superior Court Judge Philip Volland.
