Press Release

Anchorage Man Indicted for Eagle River Murder

March 13, 2015

35 year old James Andrew Baker was indicted in Anchorage yesterday for the murder of June Mary McCarr on March 8, 2015. He will be arraigned on Monday, March 16, 2015 in Anchorage. The grand jury indicted Baker on a total of 12 charges, including murder in the first degree, murder in the second degree, attempted murder in the first degree, assault in the first degree, and misconduct involving a weapon in the third degree.

According to the charging documents, on the morning of March 8, 2015, Anchorage Police received several 911 calls from Eagle River. They found McCarr deceased in the front passenger seat. There were two other men who were also shot. Multiple witnesses identified the shooter by the name "Ajax." The investigation determined that Baker has a tattoo with the word "Ajax" on his chest and the vehicle where McCarr was found was registered to Baker. Baker was arrested on March 8 and remains in custody.

If convicted, Baker faces a sentence of up to 99 years in prison for the murder and attempted murder charges. Sentencing is based on the judge’s view of the seriousness of the crime and the offender’s criminal history, if any.

The indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. Defendants are presumed innocent. The State must prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
