Anchorage Man Indicted for Campbell Airstrip Road Murder
September 9, 2016
On September 8, 2016, 18 year old Kutay Bangout was indicted for the murder of Michael Mitchell on August 22, 2016. Bangout was recently charged and arrested for theft in the second degree. The grand jury returned indictments on murder in the first and second degree against Bangout.
On August 22, 2016, at approximately 8:29 a.m., the Anchorage Police Department received several 911 calls from citizens reporting a body on Campbell Airstrip Road. Several patrol officers responded and identified the body as 22 year old Michael Miquan Mitchell. Mitchell appeared to have been shot multiple times in the head and torso. Officers determined that Mitchell was deceased.
The Anchorage Police Department Homicide Unit’s investigation led to the identification of Bangout as a suspect. The investigation was aided by the cooperation of several Anchorage citizens and businesses as well as support from the Alaska State Troopers.
An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. Defendants are presumed innocent. The State must prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. If convicted, Bangout faces a sentence of up to 99 years in prison. Sentencing is determined by the court’s evaluation of the circumstances of the offense and the defendant.
Bangout has been in custody since last week in connection with the theft charge. Bangout is expected to be arraigned in Anchorage Superior Court on Monday, September 12, 2016 where bail will likely be set.
