Man Arrested in Juneau Following Sexual Abuse Indictment
November 23, 2016
(ANCHORAGE, AK) – On Wednesday, November 22, 2016, 42 year old Sergius Sheakley was arrested by the Juneau Police Department on an arrest warrant for sexual abuse of a minor. Earlier in the day, Sheakley had been indicted by the Anchorage grand jury on two counts of sexual abuse of a minor in the first degree and five counts of sexual abuse of a minor in the second degree.
The charges allege sexual abuse of two different children beginning in 2005. In 2014, the Anchorage Police Department Crimes against Children Unit began investigating a claim by the aunt of the children that Sheakley sexually abused the children in Anchorage and Juneau. One of the alleged victims is Sheakley’s stepdaughter and the other alleged victim is Sheakley’s daughter.
Sheakley faces a sentence of up to 99 years for the alleged sexual abuse. Officers from the Juneau Police Department arrested Sheakley last evening on his arrest warrant, which requires Sheakley to post $50,000 cash and a court-approved third-party custodian.
The charges in the indictment are only an allegation and are not evidence of guilt. The defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial at which the prosecution must prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
